Why Turn-Based RPGs Belong On Phones

June 17, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

There's a lazy take that action games are the future of mobile and turn-based RPGs are a relic. After a long run with Emberfall Saga, I think it's the opposite. The turn-based format might be the ideal shape for a phone game.

Think about how you actually play on mobile. You get interrupted. Someone talks to you, your stop arrives, the kettle boils. A twitchy action game punishes that. A turn-based fight waits patiently for you to come back, exactly where you left it.

The good ones also lean into planning over reflexes, which means you're not fighting the touch screen for precise inputs. You tap a skill, you pick a target, you think. That's a much better use of a small screen than trying to aim with your thumb.

If you've written off the genre, give a modern one a real shot. The writing and systems have come a long way, and the format respects the messy way we actually play games on the go.
